ATHENS, GEORGIA – On the third day of the CCSA Swimming and Diving Championships, the University of the Incarnate Word picked up victories in the men's and women's 400-yard individual medley races at the Gabrielson Natatorium. (

The third day of the four day meet began with the men's 400-yard individual medley. Sophomore
David Moore (San Antonio/Marshall HS) blew away the field for the second straight year. He touched the wall in 3:49.10 which was an NCAA Division I 'B' cut time.
Aaron Moran (Helotes/Brandeis HS) finished third in the vent for the Cardinals in a time of 3:55.65.
Similarly, freshman
Alona Kyselova (Kiev, Ukraine/Tarasa Shevchenko) won the women's 400-yard individual medley in a time of 4:13.15 that broke the CCSA and school records.
The UIW men had a number of top performances, but did not win any more races on the day.
Mehdi El Hazzaz (Casablanca, Morocco/Al Jabr) and
Andrey Chechelnytskyi each earned runner-up honors in their races. El Hazzaz swam the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 1:37.87 while Chechelnytskyi was in the 100-yard breaststroke and swam a time of 55.27 in the finals. He also swam a time of 54.68 in the preliminaries.
Kaulen Applin (Houston/MacArthur HS) and
Brendan Schaffer (Charlotte, NC/S. Mecklenburg HS) each won bronze medals. Applin was third in the 100-yard butterfly in a time of 49.17 while Schaffer was third in the 1-meter diving event with 281.45 points.
In the final event of the night, the UIW 400-yard medley relay team of
Jorge Escarcega (El Paso/Cathedral HS), Chechelnytskyi, Applin and El Hazzaz finished second in a time of 3:17.27.
The Cardinals are in second place with 535 points while UMBC leads the way with 699 points. Gardner-Webb is third with 484 points and they are followed by NJIT (190), VMI (158) and Howard (113).
The UIW women did not earn a lot of points on the third day of the meet. Other than Kyselova's victory in the 400 IM, the next best individual finish was
Daria Makieieva (Mariupol, Ukraine/Olimpic Reserve of Sergey Bubka) in the 100-yard breaststroke. She took sixth place with a time of 1:03.62.
Lana Nguyen (Kiev, Ukraine/NPD) won the consolation final in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 56.24.
The Cardinals' 400-yard medley relay team of
Abigail Meyer (Austin/Bowie HS), Makieieva, Kyselova and Nguyen took fifth place in a time of 3:47.52.
Florida Gulf Coast leads the women's meet with 1114 points and Liberty is second with 834 points. Georgia Southern is third with 782.5 points and they are followed by Gardner-Webb (675.5), UIW (618), Campbell (384), UNC-Asheville (288), North Florida (239), North Carolina A&T (161), VMI (151) and Howard (102).
